Introduction to eSIM technology
A SIM card is a chip card that stores user information and is used for communication and identity verification between mobile devices and networks. It is very common in our daily lives. In recent years, SIM cards have been evolving towards “smaller” sizes, from Standard SIM to Mini SIM, Micro SIM, and now the widely known Nano SIM, with each change resulting in a significant reduction in size.
eSIM (embedded SIM), short for Embedded SIM card, is a new SIM technology that changes the use of traditional SIM cards and provides a connection method for devices without a physical SIM card. Compared with traditional SIM cards, eSIM technology has significant advantages: it not only can save space, reduce costs, enhance functional computing power, and improve security, but also provide more flexible and convenient communication services.
eSIM application scenarios
eSIMs are only 10% the size of traditional SIM cards, offering more flexibility in product design. They also simplify device configuration and network switching through digital processes, better meeting communication needs in the Internet of Things, wearable, and other scenarios. As new technologies like 5G, AI, IoT, and connected vehicles rapidly develop, eSIM technology will be incorporated into more devices, providing users with more convenient and efficient network connectivity.
Watchdata eSIM solution
As a professional data security solution provider with a complete set of SIM and eSIM connectivity solutions, Watchdata can provide global customers with comprehensive, efficient, and customized services to help customers achieve extensive network coverage and reliable security connections
1. SAS-UP
SAS-UP (Security Accreditation Scheme for UICC Production) is the UICC production safety certification scheme launched by the GSMA and is one of the most rigorous and authoritative safety audit standards worldwide. SAS-UP certification covers production security, physical security, network security, personnel security, data security, logistics security, ensuring the security of UICC in the entire production and use process, and providing a solid guarantee for users’ information security.
Watchdata has been certified by SAS-UP. From traditional SIM cards to the latest eSIM technology, we offer innovative products that meet international standards and help businesses connect seamlessly across the globe.
2. M2M eSIM
M2M (Machine-to-Machine) architecture is an application pattern of eSIM in the Internet of Things. In 2013, the GSMA published the first edition of the eSIM standard for M2M devices, including the overall architecture SGP.01 and the technical requirements SGP.02. This milestone release marks the official application of eSIM technology in the field of IoT, providing a standardized solution for subsequent IoT device connectivity and management.
In accordance with the GSMA specification, Watchdata is capable of providing solutions to fulfill customers’ M2M scenario requirements, accomplish flexible, efficient and secure network connection management for devices, and assist customers in significantly reducing maintenance costs and enhancing operational efficiency.
3. Consumer eSIM
In the constantly evolving field of consumer electronics, eSIM technology has brought about a revolutionary change in the way users interact with smart devices through its remote configuration and lifecycle management features. Watchdata strictly adheres to SGP related specifications and independently develops the Watchdata eSIM management platform. The platform not only conducts efficient management of eSIM profiles, including initialization, download, installation, activation, deactivation, and deletion, but also guarantees the security and stability of data transfer.
Watchdata’s eSIM management platform is GSMA SAS-SM security certified to offer more reliable eSIM management services to customers worldwide.
4. IoT eSIM
With the vigorous development of the Internet of Things industry, connectivity technology has emerged as a key force propelling its rapid advancement. In this context, the GSMA released the architecture standard SGP.31 for IoT eSIM solutions in 2022 and further published the technical requirements standard SGP.32 in 2023.
Keeping up with the trend of technology, Watchdata has independently developed the Watchdata IoT Connection platform. The platform not only adheres to the technical specifications of the GSMA, but also integrates the remote configuration and full lifecycle management functions of eSIM contracted services, providing a one-stop solution of “chip +eSIM management + connectivity services” for iot terminals and consumer electronic devices.
Looking forward, eSIM technology will undoubtedly become a key force driving the revolution of smart devices, reshaping our social production and lifestyle. However, in the journey of eSIM technology toward worldwide commercialization, challenges and opportunities coexist. How to ensure the security of eSIM technology, how to quickly meet the individual needs of different users , and other such questions require the joint efforts and exploration of the industry and external parties. Facing these challenges, we will actively promote innovative practices, actively collaborate with industry partners, scientific research institutions and demand departments to continuously improve the security and user experience of eSIM technology, and jointly promote the development and application of eSIM technology on a global scale.
