In 2007, Madhya Pradesh, a large state in India, wanted to replace the paper books or laminated plastic cards with smart cards as the Driver´s License Cards and Vehicle Registration Cards.
Since then, Watchdata has provided millions of 16K SCOSTA-compliant smart cards to various States like Maharashtra, Karnataka, Jharkhand, Assam, etc. SCOSTA (Smart Card Operating Systems Standards) is an interoperable standard first for all smart card-based driver´s license cards and vehicle registration cards developed by India´s National Informatics Center and mandated by the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways. Actually, SCOSTA standards also apply to Citizen ID Card, PDS card, RSBY, Financial Inclusion Card, etc. Since it is primarily based on ISO-7816 standards, it is therefore also compliant with any international requirements.
Compared to the previous Books/Plastic cards, the new Driver´s License Cards and Vehicle Registration Cards provided by Watchdata helped the Transport authorities to manage issuing of Drivers License and Vehicles Registration better . With the new card and corresponding information system, the Transport Authorities could check in real time the information about the Driver and the Vehicle. It greatly enhanced the whole Transport management efficiency.
